Family is the greatest thing the Lord has given us. God is a family man. He is our heavenly Father. He is love. He is the one who created us and everything in this world. Joy, happiness, laughter, wisdom, acceptance, and so much more comes to mind when I think of family.
Even with this amazing thing called family, also comes some sweat and tears. There are hardships in a family. Even death. There are times to mourn and times to cheer. Times to cry and times to laugh. Times to advise and times to encourage. Times to hug and times to give space.
Being inside the true biblical family is the only place to encounter the true love of God. God is love! (1 John 4:8) So anything outside of God is just a counterfeit of God. What the world calls love, outside of God and his kingdom, is not love at all.
He calls us His children. He calls us to be fathers and mothers of the Kingdom. He is calling us to bring people into a place that they can encounter and taste the family of God. This is where we all have had or will have the opportunity to encounter God, who is love.
This is the call into the family of God from an orphan to a son or daughter. There is no greater love that can be expressed or encountered than when the orphan comes into the kingdom of God and becomes a child of the one true king.
I had an encounter on Sunday morning at 4 am. I had a dream about family. The Lord woke me up and He said very clearly, “ I am love. Love outside of true family is selfish.” I was undone at that moment.
Love outside of God, who is love, is a counterfeit of God. Love defined outside of God and His kingdom is only used as “love” to manipulate and control. We have the world trying to define love in so many different ways, ways that are so far from the truth.
So what is love? Thank you for asking. Love is just that. God is love. The best scripture that defines what love really is, is in 1 Corinthians 13. This is known as the “love” chapter. This is who God is.
Let me propose something when talking about the love chapter of 1 Corinthians 13. I propose that because 1 Corinthians 13 is between chapter 12 and 14 in 1 Corinthians for a very strategic reason. Chapter 12 and 14 in 1 Corinthians are well known for the gifts that the Holy Spirit has given the body of Christ to be able to advance the kingdom of God through structure, edification, love, hope, joy, and encouragement.
The body of Christ (Family of God) is to be functioning as a well-oiled machine that works in one accord as a fully functioning family works with different people doing different tasks, holding different responsibilities, and calls.
The father, the mother, the sons and daughters have very individual yet specific role within the family. The son cannot be the father just as the mother cannot be the daughter.
So how can there be love outside of God’s family, when our Father and the creator of everything in the world is defined as love? It is impossible. God is love. So anything outside of God is outside of true love.
So our call as sons and daughters of the King of kings and Lord of lords, as Fathers and Mothers to this generation and those coming after it, is to bring people into the family of God to encounter the Father’s love. To be apart of this family, to be able to encounter true love for the first time and to live in the pure love of God for eternity.
